I live close to Lifford in Co Donegal.  I originally joined the North West Mountain Rescue Team in late 1992 and served with them for nine years.  Whilst in NWMRT I held the posts of PRO for a year, Training  Officer for a year and I was Team Leader for four years from 1996 to 2000.  I joined Donegal MRT in 2001 after moving to Donegal to live.  I am the current Chairperson with DMRT, a post I have held since  2004.  I also hold the Mountain Leader Award and am also the National Training Development Officer for the Irish Mountain Rescue Association.

I live in the area of St.Johnston in north west Donegal.I Am the current Training Officer for DMRT

I have been a member of DMRT for 4yrs and I am the youngest member of the team at the minute at ONLY 36! and it shows, even though some members of the team will try and lead you to believe that they are the youngest but their grey hairs will tell the truth.

I come from a military background spending 5yrs in the army but I am now a Paramedic with the HSE based in Letterkenny which comes in handy now and then when you have to get some of the team out of bed to go training ha.

I am currently the deputy team leader of DMRT with only 3mths remaining and I have also held the position of equipment officer for 2yrs.

The reason why I like being a member of DMRT is the craic we have between us should it be on a training session or a callout or even the odd txt in the middle of the night when some members are out partying ha.

Well I'm not going to bum an blow about what I can do or what I have done all I will say is the hardest part of being a member is trying to get money from Joe (treasurer) ha.

I am the only team member from Inishowen. Inishowen is one of the most enchanting places in the whole of Ireland.

I have been a member of DMRT for 3 years and enjoy getting out on the hills and also the craic with the other team members, who are all a great bunch. I come from an ICT background and currently work in project management within the public sector.

My hobbies include running, swimming and hill-walking, but I am also quite happy lying in a heap on the sofa watching TV or dining with friends.

My proudest moment to date was reaching the geographic North Pole in April 2006 (and if anybody out there would be so kind as to sponsor me, I would love to add the South Pole to that, possibly climbing Mount Vinson en-route).

I joined Donegal Mountain Rescue Team Jan 2007.

Moved to Donegal 5 years ago with my family from a small village in

Oxfordshire where I did Dry stone walling and property restoration.

My wife is Irish and teaches French here in Glenties. My daughter is

at Galway university and my son is at school in Glenties.

During the 1980's I helped run a mountain bike specialist shop in

Oxford called Walton Street Cycles and took part in many mountain

bike events. My background is in Road Racing and Mountain Biking

where I developed a love for mountains and challenging terrain.

I also trained in Goju ryu karate for a few years and ran 10k +

   half marathons.

Its a pleasure working/training with Donegal MRT and also

meeting people from other teams from Ireland and U.K.

After spending many years taking part in outdoor activities I'm very

happy to be giving something back and helping people in difficulties

in the wild unpredictable environment of Donegal.

I live on the Main Street in Glenties which has won the Tidy Towns Competition more times than any other place in the whole country (5 times - very proud).

I ‘m a self employed painter and decorator and I also work part time in the local museum in Glenties.

I have had a love of mountains from a young age, influenced in the most part by the rugged landscape of Donegal and also from stories about early explorers.I am the current Deputy team leader and PRO for DMRT.

I’ve done a bit of walking and climbing here and there; so much so that mountains dictate where I go on holidays. It’s probably an obsession but I suppose I could be at worse!

I joined the team in January 2006 after replying to an ad in the Donegal Democrat. Since then the opportunities to increase my knowledge and technical skills in mountaineering have been great. I’m currently working towards gaining a Mountain Leader Award as too are several other team members. The search and rescue aspect, being the most important, is also the most interesting part of training, with courses taking place both within the team and all over the country. As for team relations, you couldn’t meet a better bunch of people like-minded in interests both professionally and socially - we’re never stuck for interesting ideas when it comes to the next trip away.

Norman Miller

Address: NE Donegal

I joined Donegal MRT on May 2000 simply because I was in the right place at the right time. I started out my volunteer life as a member of Civil Defence in 1989. Initially I was  “Warden 6R2 “. For those that don’t remember, we were responsible for checking the Gamma Readings in the event of the Cold War becoming Hot.

After these positions were abolished in Co. Donegal in 1990, I trained with various sections in the Civil Defence, from  “Man Pack” Rescue to Aux. Fire Service (C.D.) and finally Boat Section. It was during the launch of the Severn Class Lifeboat in Arranmore, I walked up to a Donegal MRT Landrover and said “ any room for one more?”
